You and your friends, and many others, will definitely approve and condone your promotion of this area. Pete's Point is a magnificent climb of one of the high points of Oregon, which will surely give you a boost in self-edification. If you value the wildness, solitude, and lack of crowds, this is the the winter excursion for you. I am hell-bent on advertising this area with the double goal of spending my personal money to promote our beautiful mountains in my backyard. Attaining this summit will definitely massage your already large ego, so go for it if the conditions are right and please share your experience with the rest of us. Many people who have skied and explored the many nice places around here and posted maps, photos and reports all over the interent. This is deep in the wilderness so you won't find snow machined and you can enjoy and value solitude and quiet....and self propulsion. You won't want to stop at the summit, because there is much more fun in the Aneroid area. After your trip, contribute an avy report of value so others have some information to safely enjoy our outdoors. We would like to admire your excursion...demonstrating you are cool rad young dudes (and old) enjoying the human experience of being in the mountains...
It's because of places like Pete's Point that I'm not interested in living in Bend: you don't need a sled to access it, the weather is usually horrendous, and the the wind rips. Plus, there isn't much nightlife in Joseph in the winter. It's my kind of place. Our recreation friends from Bend are welcome to visit though, just be prepared for something fierce...probably too fierce to move here. After all, this is one of the last thinly populated places without hoardes of lycra clad people all over the place; although, full disclosure, I'm all over the place in my lycra.
When visiting, think about your positive impact, and keep this place pristine...even share it with the others. I know there are lots of intelligent Chamber websites, and tourism contributions...and many snomo riders also having fun around the Wallowas...so I'm not going to be selfish and try to keep this place a secret. I'm fully aware of the impacts we have in the wilderness, which is mainly during the high visitation summers at Wallowa Lake. In the winter, I like to enjoy rugged less-traveled places like Pete's Point...and out of respect for others who love solitude at known stashes like this, I'm sharing what I know here. I love this concept!!!
So please enjoy Pete's Point in the winter because of the great ski opportunities, such as descending the classic route down the cirque. More ambitious couloirs exist on both north aspects of this cirque. The safest winter approach from avalanche is on the north ridge (shown here), but there is some vertical exposure risk.
